    Les jeunes filles de l’ethnie Mende, qui occupe le sud de la Sierra-Leone, sont admises à leur puberté dans la société secrète Bundu et se retirent dans la brousse sous la direction de vielles femmes du village pour y apprendre les règles de leur ethnie. Pendant cette  initiation, elles portent un curieux masque-heaume garni de longues fibres de raphia teintées de noir qui sont supposées les protéger de tout contact.  

     Ce type de masque est caractérisé par un front démesuré souvent surmonté d’une coiffure élaborée, un très petit visage et un cou  épais. Le présent masque (collection particulière) est d’une grande sobriété et montre un visage finement sculpté reflétant une grande sérénité.

     The young girls of the Mende people, who occupy the south of Sierra-Leone, participate at the age of puberty in the Bundu secret society, and retire to the forest under the supervision of matrons in order to learn the rules of their people. During this initiation period, they wear a curious helmet-type mask donned with a long raphia robe coloured black, which is supposed to protect them from any outside contact. 

     This type of mask usually shows a high forehead with a rich hairdo, a tiny face and fat neck-rings. The present mask (which belongs to a private collection), is both very sober and elegant, with a pretty face delicately carved, showing a profound serenity.
